Itinerary 1
A day for walkers who want to enjoy all the Nature Reserve has to offer.
Take the cable car to the Top of the Rock first thing. Buy a packed lunch and get ready for a long walk! The Interactive Tour, included in your Cable Car ticket price, is a great introduction to Gibraltar. After following it around the Top of the Rock (30 minutes to 2 hours), follow the country road downhill to St Michael’s Cave, about a 20 minutes stroll, where you can admire the impressive stalagmites and stalactites.
Another short stroll downhill leads you to the Apes Den and some people will find it impossible to tear themselves away from these fascinating creatures who at times seem almost strangely human. Though make sure you don’t eat your packed lunch here as they like to steal food!
A short pull uphill takes you to the Upper Galleries, or Great Siege Tunnels, where you can find out how Gibraltar’s natural fortress position was strengthened further by the ingenuity of soldiers. The City Under Siege Exhibition will give you another insight into this period of Gibraltar’s history and is a ten minute walk from the Tunnels.
Round off your Top of the Rock trip with a visit to the Moorish Castle, followed by your pic-nic in the Alameda Gardens at the Cable Car base station. Following this, a gentle afternoon’s shopping, perhaps stopping for a drink in a pavement café, is just what the doctor ordered. Find Main Street and it’s varied shopping just a ten minute walk from Alameda Gardens.
Itinerary 2
A day of variety, taking in the Top of the Rock, shopping and the dolphins
What could be a better way to start the day than heading out on a glass-bottomed boat into the bay of Gibraltar, the morning sun on your back, to see some of the most charming creatures in the Sea? Gibraltar is famous for its dolphins who flock to the warm waters around Gibraltar and the trip takes around 2 hours.
Follow this by heading to the Cable Car where you will be whisked up to the Top of the Rock, just in time for a mid morning coffee or even a light lunch at the Cafeteria. The Interactive Guide, included with your Cable Car ticket, gives you an excellent insight into the history, geography and wildlife of Gibraltar and recounts many memorable stories to take home with you.
After descending the Rock by Cable Car, stroll into the city centre, where the shopping delights of Main Street await you, with their superb Duty Free prices and famous high street names.
As an alternative to this itinerary you can go to the Top of the Rock first and then move onto the Dolphin Safari, followed by lunch at any of the restaurants in the Marina
Itinerary 3
A day for people looking for a more relaxed tour, and some tranquility
Alameda Gardens in the morning sun is a peaceful place to start the day, enjoying the variety of plants and flowers in this botanic garden. Follow this with a trip by Cable Car to the Top of the Rock where you can enjoy the Interactive Tour, which gives an excellent insight into the history, geography and wildlife of the Rock. By this time, you’ll be ready for some lunch and the Cafeteria at the Top Station is perfectly placed to provide you with sandwiches or a light snack.
Take the Cable Car back down the Rock and visit the Museum, housed in an historic building and giving a fascinating background to Gibraltar. Located near Main Street, round off your day with some gentle shopping and perhaps a cup of coffee at one of the pavement cafes. Top of the Rock next, with lunch at the Sandwich /Coffee Bar
Itinerary 4
A day with everything arranged for you!
Calypso Tours is a local company offering tours of Gibraltar and the Top of the Rock Nature Reserve. With knowledgeable guides and comfortable air conditioned buses, this is an excellent way to discover Gibraltar and includes all the main sites, including the Top of the Rock and Interactive Guide.
