If you are staying half a day……The Top of the Rock of Gibraltar and the duty free shopping should certainly be top of your list!
Start your day by making your way to the Base Station of the Cable Car, the fastest way to the Top and an experience in its own. Click here to find out more. Hop on and take a ride straight to the Top of the Rock where you will have spectacular 360 degree views of Africa, Spain, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
The Top of the Rock is also the perfect place to see the Apes monkeying around in their natural habitat. Take time for a quick snack in the Top of the Rock Family Restaurant and Coffee Shop. Then simply enjoy the views in any of its terraces before taking the Cable Car back down to town.
As an alternative, you can take a stroll down the gentle hill from the Cable Car Top Station to St Michael’s Cave, a dramatic grotto filled with stalagmites and stalactites. And from there to the Cable Car Middle Station, where you can travel back to town.
A short stroll from the Cable Car is Main Street, the heart of the Shopping Centre, where you can stock up on Duty Free items including electrics, perfume, beverages, cigarettes and much more at outstanding prices. There is also a wide selection of British high street names, such as Marks and Spencers, BHS and Wallis. If shopping has given you a thirst, sip a drink at one of the pavement cafés while admiring the charming buildings.
Conveniently, at the opposite end of Main Street from the Cable Car Base Station, after your shopping excursion, is Casemates Square, the ideal place to catch a bus or taxi, or simply walk to your chosen point of exit from Gibraltar. See maps for reference.
The duration of the Top of the Rock experience can vary from 30 mins to 2 hours, depending on what activities you choose to take at the Top. Add 30 minutes for an optional walk to the Middle Station, plus at least 30 minutes if you choose to visit the Cave.
A walk through the Shopping Centre will take 20 mins, although you should expect to take longer depending on your Shopping ‘mood’.
As a rule of thumb, the duration would be from 1.5 hours (for Top of the Rock by Cable Car alone) to 5 hours for the full visit.*
